Golf Tips For Beginners
Choosing The Right Golf Balls
Until a few years ago your choice of golf balls was simple. Professional golfers used a three piece golf ball which was covered in balata and could take of a high degree of spin, while the average golfer used a much harder two piece golf ball which was covered in surlyn.
Today, however, things have changed considerably are there is a wide variety of different golf balls to choose from which makes choosing the right golf ball far harder than it used to be. So, let's see if we can simplify things a little bit.
If we look at golf balls on a sliding scale then, at one end we have soft, high spin, three piece golf balls which are very expensive and which tend to be used only by professional golfers. At the other end of the scale are what can best be described as standard two piece golf balls which have a low spin capability and are favored by novices and beginner golfers.
Then, in the middle, comes a range of new golf balls which are designed to give you good distance off the tee and also to provide you with a high degree of control over the ball.
Now, if you are a beginner you will clearly want to start with an inexpensive two piece ball with low spin characteristics, so your choice is easy. Although these basic golf balls will not give you a great deal of control over the balls flight, they will nonetheless tend to fly in a straight line and thus are far more forgiving when it comes to the inevitable bad shot or three that most beginners make.
As your golfing skills improve you can then begin to move up the scale and start to select from the many multipurpose golf balls available now which will give you a little more control over the flight of the ball. With practice, the combination of your growing skill and these new style balls will help you to steer your ball in different directions to make more complex and successful shots.
Remember that while good golfers want as much control over their shots as they can get so that they can, for example, steer their ball to either the left or the right, beginners are really only concerned about getting every last yard they can from their shots and having their ball fly in a straight line.
Here are two other simple but important tips when it comes to golf balls:
- Keep your golf balls warm: If your golf ball is cold then it will not carry as far as it would if it were warm. If you are out on the course on a cold day then tuck a few balls into your coat pocket and roll them in your hands as you walk the course to keep them warmed up. Each time you arrive at a new tee you can swap the ball used on the previous hole for a warm ball from your pocket.
- Golf balls have a limited shelf life: You will find that after about a year a ball will start to lose distance, so it is a good idea to keep track of how long you have been using a particular set of golf balls so that you can replace them before the year is out. You will also find that three piece balls tend to lose distance slightly more quickly than two piece golf balls.
