Rules Of Golf For Clubs And Balls
(Rules 4 & 5)

Absolutely central to every game of golf are the clubs and balls that are used in play and so rules 4 and 5 cover these two items.

Rule 4. Clubs.

As you can imagine the rules governing clubs are complex. In essence, however, manufacturers are required to submit samples of all clubs to the appropriate ruling authority and await the decision of that authority before manufacturing and selling the club.

Once accepted, the rules provide that clubs should not be altered in any way either by the manufacturer or by players to provide any playing advantage. For example, the club should not be adjusted in any way which might include adding any foreign material to the club face with the intention of influencing the movement of the ball.

The rules also detail the procedure in the event of damage to a club either during or prior to play commencing.

The rules also state that players may not play a round with more than a total of 14 clubs and that this rule shall also apply in cases where partners are sharing clubs. A player may start a round with less that 14 clubs and add clubs during a round, but may not exceed 14 clubs for the round as a whole.

Rule 5. Balls.

The rule concerning balls is similar to that applied to clubs in that balls must be submitted to the appropriate ruling body and be approved for use.

The rules also lay down when a ball should be considered fit for play and distinguishes between such things as a ball which cracks, splits or becomes substantially out of shape during play and a ball which is scraped or scratched or which has material adhering to it during play.

This rules also lays down the circumstances and procedures for picking up a ball to inspect and clean it and for substituting balls during play.
