Rules Of Golf For The Putting Green (Rules 16 & 17)
Rule 16. Touching The Line Of The Putt
A player may not touch the line of the putt except:
- In removing impediments (providing nothing is pressed down).
- In placing the club in front of the ball when addressing it (providing nothing is pressed down).
- In measuring.
- In lifting and replacing the ball.
- In pressing down a ball marker.
- In repairing old hole plugs or ball marks on the putting surface.
- In removing movable objects.
Lifting And Cleaning The Ball.
A ball may be lifted and cleaned on the putting green providing the position of the ball is marked before it is lifted.
Repairing Hole Plugs, Ball Marks And Other Damage.
It is permissible to repair hole plugs and damage made by the impact of a ball on the putting green, whether or not the player's ball is on the green, but other damage may not be repaired if it might assist the player in subsequent play.
Testing The Putting Surface.
A player may not test the surface of the green by rolling a ball over it or by scraping or roughening the surface.
Standing On The Line Of The Putt.
A player may not make a stroke standing astride the line of the putt or with either foot touching the line of the putt.
Making A Stroke While Another Ball Is In Motion.
A player must not make a stroke while another ball is in motion on the putting green.
The Ball Overhanging The Hole.
When a ball is overhanging the lip of the hole a player is permitted sufficient time to approach the hole plus a further ten seconds in order to determine whether or not the ball has come to rest. If by this time the ball has not fallen into the hole then it is deemed to be at rest.
If the ball subsequently falls into the hole then the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke and must add a
penalty stroke to his score for that hole.
Rule 17. The Flagstick.
Whether on the putting green or not a player may require that the flagstaff is attended, removed or held up to mark the position of the hole.
If the flagstick is not attended, removed or held up before a shot is played then it must remain in position if to do otherwise would influence the movement of the ball once in motion.
A player's ball must not strike:
- The flagstick when it is attended, removed or held up.
- The person attending or holding up the flagstick.
- The flagstick when it is in the hole and unattended and the stroke originated on the putting green.
If a player's ball is resting against the flagstick in the hole then the player (or somebody authorized by the player) may move or remove the flagstick. If in so doing the ball falls into the hole then the player is considered to have holed out with his last stroke. If the ball does not fall in the hole but is moved then it may be placed on the edge of the hole without penalty.
