If, however, a stroke is made at a ball which has fallen off the tee, then this stroke will count.

Playing Outside The Teeing Ground.

In match play a player can place his ball into play by taking a stroke outside of the teeing ground without penalty. An opponent can however object and require the player to take the shot again from within the teeing ground.

In stroke play a player making a stroke outside of the teeing ground will incur a two stroke penalty and will be required to take his shot again from within the teeing ground.

The rules for playing outside the teeing ground apply equally to playing from the wrong teeing ground.
