Golf Tips - Top Of The Backswing
How To Swing A Golf Club - The Top Of Your Swing
Having executed the perfect backswing you now have the club high above your head and are poised for that equally perfect downswing.
The Top Of Your Swing
At this point it is very important to resist the temptation to swing your body as this will damage any consistency in your swing. The club is in the air and, if you are correctly positioned, is pointing towards your target line. Most of your weight is on the right foot and your left knee is bent slightly inward towards your right knee.
Throughout the entire backswing your right knee should also have a slight bend and will act as a brace for the power which will come from your body. You might also find that your left foot rises slightly at the top of your backswing. This is fine, but you should keep any rise to a minimum as it can affect the accuracy of your swing. If you can, it is best to practice keeping your left foot on the ground.
Everything In Its Place
If you have everything just right then this is the moment when you should feel the power which you have just rolled tightly into your body and is now waiting to be released. You should feel confident and balanced, with your shoulders turned through a full 90 degrees and your hips turned to about 45 degrees. (Don't measure these angles as they are simply an aiming guide and each individual will achieve slightly different angles depending upon their flexibility and their own personal technique.)
Practice your backswing as often as you can to get it just right and don't forget that you don't need to be at the driving range or on the golf course for this particular exercise. Simply stand in front of a mirror so you can see what you're doing and, if possible, practice with a friend who can who can offer constructive criticism. Look for the following points:
- Make sure that your head is fairly well centered over the ball. A little bit of lateral movement is fine, but not too much.
- Keep your left arm reasonably straight throughout the entire backswing with just a small amount of bend if necessary.
- Tuck your left shoulder in under your chin.
- Fold your right arm smoothly into your side, brushing it across your rib cage.
- Keep your right knee bent throughout the entire backswing.
- Make sure that your body weight shifts considerably onto your right foot as your body turns.
