How To Swing A Golf Club - Putting It All Together
Let's finally put it all together by summarizing just what it takes to make the perfect golf swing:
- Keep in mind that when learning to swing a golf club you are having to swing the club in two planes. In most other sports which you may have played previously, such as baseball, you are only swinging in one plane - the horizontal plane.
- When making your golf swing don't concentrate on making contact with the ball but think about your swing as a complete movement from the backswing, through the downswing and into the follow through which simply picks up the golf ball along the way.
- Do not simply use brute strength or force but concentrate on making you swing smooth, fluid, graceful and balanced.
- Don't let your swing plane become too steep and work towards making it flat rather than steep.
- Start your backswing slowly with the club head moving close to the ground and ensure that your body as a whole moves through the backswing.
- At the top of the backswing your the right arm should be close in against your side (for a right-handed golfer) and your left arm should be straight, but not stiff. Your shoulders should be turned through approximately 90° and your hips through approximately 45°. Your weight should be largely on your right foot.
- In the downswing your hips should turn first (followed by your shoulders, arms, hands and finally the club head) to uncoil your body. Your weight should also be transferred onto your left foot during the downswing.
- It is very important to follow through once the ball has been hit as failing to follow through can result in less power being transferred to the ball. It can also result in injury if you try to suddenly stop your body moving at the bottom of your downswing.
- Finally, if you are just beginning then practice your swing with a 7-iron and don't move on to explore other clubs until you have mastered the basics.
