How To Swing A Golf Club - The Backswing

It takes years of practice to learn how to make a great golf swing and, if you want to get it right each time you step up to the ball, then you will need to practice so that your swing becomes one flowing and graceful motion from the start of your backswing, through the impact of the ball and into your follow through.

The Backswing

The first part of your swing is the backswing and this is particularly important because it sets the scene for everything that follows. If your backswing is not completed correctly then everything else which follows will be less than satisfactory and the end result will be a bad shot. The backswing consists of two elements:

The Takeaway

As soon as you are comfortable and ready to take your shot start your backswing by moving your club slowly being sure to keep the club head as close to the ground as you can.

If you try to move the club too quickly you may well create too steep a swing plane and this will reduce both the power of your swing and the accuracy of your shot. If you are a right-handed player then you must also ensure that your left shoulder is slightly higher than the right shoulder and that your shoulders, arms, and hips all move together in a single fluid motion.

It is very common for beginners to start their backswing off with just their arms and hands and find it difficult to hit the ball with enough power or consistency. It is important to learn to coordinate your body and the real key is not to think about it too much and just to go with the flow feeling your arms, shoulders and upper legs moving together as you turn.

As You Turn

Once you get your backswing in motion and you body starts its turn, you will find that your right arm will begin to fold inside. Keep you left arm fairly straight, but not stiff, and hold your right elbow close to your body throughout the entire backswing. At this stage, everything should be turning naturally and you should feel your weight beginning to shift.

Once you reach the point at which your club shaft is parallel to the ground and pointing straight back behind you, your wrists will begin to bend naturally and it is important that you do not tighten your grip. Your aim should be to adopt a loose an almost casual grip which is just tight enough to allow you retain control at all times. Keep your turn moving gracefully until your left shoulder begins to come in under your chin and your left knee starts to bend toward your right knee.

At this point your club is now high in the air over the top of your head and your backswing is complete. You are now ready to start your downswing.
